The Memphis City Council has approved an agreement with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to allow primitive firearms hunting programs on certain parts of Presidents Island in Southwest Memphis. Councilman Brent Taylor sought establishment of a Wildlife Management Area to provide for the hunting.
"I'm glad TWRA and the Council could come together on this important issue," said Taylor. "The deer population on Presidents Island has become a serious threat to vehicular traffic. Additionally, the food supply is not large enough to support the current deer population. As a result, limited hunting is now being allowed on Presidents Island and the Pidgeon Industrial Park," remarked Taylor.
Archery hunting commenced with the 2001 hunting season and primitive firearms hunting will begin with the 2004 hunting season. Both programs are slated to continue indefinitely. Councilman Taylor sponsored the resolution that provided for the primitive firearms hunting program within the WMA.
