Ground has been broken for the new World War II monument in Overton Park. Councilman Brent Taylor says the monument will be placed in Veterans Plaza near the Doughboy memorial that honors those killed in the First World War.
"The monument will list the 700 names of Memphis and Shelby County residents who died fighting in World War II," said Taylor. The names will be inscribed on a bronze plaque and placed atop an 18-foot-long section of limestone he said. Actual construction should begin in about one month with completion expected by November 1st.
The cost of the monument is over $36,000. Taylor obtained a grant from the City of Memphis for $26,000 of the cost. Local veterans raised the remainder.
