Councilman Brent Taylor has announced that Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) has completed a project to save the U.S. Navy millions of dollars. The savings are the result of an overhaul of the energy systems at Naval Support Activity Memphis in Millington.

"MLGW estimates they'll save the Navy about $1.7 million per year," said Taylor. By replacing NSA's central steam system, upgrading lighting, and installing an energy management system, the Navy's energy costs will be reduced by 30 percent by 2005 he announced.

"Lamps, gas unit heaters, and gas water heaters were replaced in addition to using fiber optic lines so the system can be run remotely," Taylor stated. "I want to commend MLGW on another outstanding job. This follows the residential gas rate reduction the council recently approved," noted Taylor.

Councilman Taylor chairs the city council's Utilities Committee that has oversight of MLGW.
